TPH Detroit Student-Athletes Christopher Weiss and Cole Mazzoni Sign with OHL Clubs
Last week brought another meaningful milestone for two TPH Detroit student-athletes, as both Christopher Weiss and Cole Mazzoni secured OHL signings with the Soo Greyhounds and Oshawa Generals, respectively.
Both players were selected in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection Draft and spent the 2025-26 season continuing their development with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 16U AAA program while their OHL rights were held. After full-season evaluations and continued progression, the Soo Greyhounds and Oshawa Generals each moved to sign their respective prospects for the 2026-27 OHL season.
The OHL is one of the top major junior leagues in North America and a proven pathway to the NHL through the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). For both Weiss and Mazzoni, the path to this point has been built on steady growth through competitive environments and daily development habits.
Christopher Weiss signed with the Soo Greyhounds to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement following a strong 2025-26 development arc that saw him produce at a high level across AAA competition. With the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 16U AAA program, he posted 47 points in 60 games while adjusting to stronger competition and a heavier role against top opponents, establishing the consistency that led to his OHL opportunity.
“Congratulations to TPH Detroit student-athlete Chris Weiss on signing with the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL,” shared TPH Detroit Director Dwayne Norris. “Chris exemplifies what being a TPH student-athlete is all about. His commitment to getting better every day, both on the ice and in the classroom, was awesome to watch. A player of high character, extreme coachability, and relentless work ethic earned him the right to play in the CHL with the Soo Greyhounds next year. The TPH Detroit staff is incredibly proud of his development and knows he is going to make an impact at the next level.”
Soo Greyhounds General Manager Kyle Raftis added, “Christopher is a lengthy defender who competes hard and makes life difficult on opposing forwards in his own zone. He is very effective in transition, using both his skating and puck-moving ability to quickly move play up ice and create offence for his teammates. We’re excited to welcome Christopher to our program and look forward to supporting him as he continues his development and takes the next step in his hockey career.”
Cole Mazzoni’s path followed a similarly upward trajectory. After being selected by Oshawa in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection, he returned to the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 16U AAA program and put together a stellar 2025-26 campaign. Mazzoni finished the season with 79 points in 61 games, including 46 goals.
His strong season also earned opportunities at higher levels, including appearances with the USHL Green Bay Gamblers, USNTDP, and time with the U.S. National U17 Team. That combination of production, development, and exposure against elite competition helped pave the way for his signing with the Oshawa Generals.
“We’re all really happy to see Cole earn the opportunity to play at the next level in Oshawa,” shared Norris. “He put in the work every day at TPH and is reaping the benefits of sacrifice. Cole has such a high ceiling and can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
Both players now step into a faster, more demanding stage of junior hockey where execution and consistency are tested every shift. TPH Detroit congratulates Christopher Weiss and Cole Mazzoni on their OHL signings and looks forward to following their continued development at the next level.
