LEANDER, Texas — TPH Academy Austin has named Joey Sundgren as an On-Ice Instructor, adding one of Central Texas hockey’s most experienced skills coaches to its player development team.

Sundgren will work directly with TPH Academy Austin student-athletes to develop the skating, skills, habits, and decision-making required to advance to the next level. His addition strengthens the Academy’s commitment to providing aspiring hockey players in Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, and across Central Texas with high-level development alongside a flexible, college-preparatory academic experience.

A Cedar Park native, Sundgren developed in the Austin-area hockey community before advancing to junior hockey with the Missoula Maulers. He went on to compete for four seasons at St. Olaf College, an NCAA Division III program in Minnesota. Following his collegiate career, Sundgren served as an assistant coach with the St. Louis Park 15U team, focusing on skating and skill development.

Since returning to Central Texas, Sundgren has become a trusted resource for players throughout the region. He is the founder and lead instructor of X-Factor Hockey, where he has coached athletes across the youth, junior, college, and professional levels. He also serves as an assistant coach and billet coordinator for the Austin Ice Bats of the North American 3 Hockey League.

At TPH Academy Austin, Sundgren will work alongside Head of Hockey Matt Frick to deliver purposeful, detail-driven training built around power skating, skill execution, hockey IQ, and decision-making under pressure. Together, Frick and Sundgren will help student-athletes understand how to apply those skills in game situations and build the habits necessary for long-term advancement.

Sundgren’s addition further strengthens the daily development experience at TPH Academy Austin, where student-athletes in Grades 6-12 combine academics, hockey training, and personal development within one structured school-day model.
