A quote by Nicholas Dragan appears over photos of young hockey players in uniform: “With unwavering dedication, I will strive for perfection, knowing full well that it is not obtainable, but along the way, I will catch excellence.”.

Catching Excellence: The Unwavering Dedication of Nicholas Dragan

A hockey goalie in full white gear and a white jersey with green and black accents stands smiling. The jersey has Mission and a shield logo on the front. The setting is an indoor ice rink.In the world of elite youth hockey, the "long game" is usually measured in skating strides, puck protection, and box scores. But for Nicholas Dragan, the journey through TPH St. Louis from 2020 to 2026 has been about a different kind of endurance. His story isn’t just one of climbing the athletic ranks; it’s a masterclass in how the right environment can turn a student’s greatest hurdle into their ultimate launchpad.

When Nicholas first walked through the doors as a seventh grader, the ice was his sanctuary, but the classroom often felt like an away game. Diagnosed with dyslexia, he found school to be a source of frustration rather than fulfillment. For many young athletes, that academic friction can become a heavy weight, often pulling their focus away from their dreams. However, Nicholas found himself in a model designed specifically to support students like him. Through the specialized NOW! program and the consistent, one-on-one mentorship of the TPH academic team, the "struggling student" narrative began to fade, replaced by a young man who realized he could dominate the books just as effectively as the boards.

Over the next six years, the transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Nicholas didn't just find a way to "get by"; he mastered the mechanics of reading, writing, and math that once felt out of reach. While maintaining the intense schedule of an elite athlete, he achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, proving that academic excellence isn't a distraction from sport—it’s the backbone of it.

A hockey goalie wearing a white Afton Americans 50 Years jersey and helmet walks through a hallway, with other players visible behind him."Nicholas has always displayed grit in the classroom and a desire to succeed academically," says Rachel Mohr, Head of Academics. "He has overcome much adversity and worked incredibly hard to improve and solidify his academic skills, particularly in writing, reading, and math. In addition to his regular Edmentum courses, he put in countless hours of work completing the NOW program, which enabled him to strengthen areas of improvement. All the while, he maintained a 4.0 GPA and kept up with the pacing of his classes. We are very proud of the unwavering determination and dedication Nicholas has shown academically over the last six years. He has thrived within the TPH model and become a leader within the academy classrooms. It has been a joy being a part of Nicholas' story, which shows that success can be achieved through the combination of proper support and a strong work ethic."

This internal growth fueled a parallel rise on the ice. Nicholas’s hockey path represents the "TPH Way" at its purest: steady, disciplined development. He began at the club level with the Afton Americans, progressed through Central States, and ultimately earned his spot at the pinnacle of youth hockey with the Tier 1 AAA Chicago Mission U18s. It was a climb earned through thousands of purposeful reps and the confidence that comes from knowing you are supported in every facet of your life.

Today, as Nicholas prepares for the next chapter in Junior Hockey and looks toward an NCAA future, he carries more than just a high-end skill set. He carries the habits of a scholar and the mindset of a winner who refuses to accept excuses. He often reflects on a quote that has become his personal mantra: “I will strive for perfection knowing full well that it is not obtainable, but along the way, I will catch excellence.”

Nicholas Dragan’s journey is a powerful reminder that when a student-athlete’s work ethic meets the right support system, the results aren't just seen in wins and losses—they are seen in the confident, capable leader they become. At TPH St. Louis, we are proud to have been the home for Nicholas’s story, a story that proves excellence is always within reach for those willing to put in the work.
