Matt Frick to Forge the Future of Hockey at TPH Academy Austin

TPH Academy is proud to announce the appointment of Matt Frick as the new Head of Hockey at TPH Academy Austin. A Detroit native, decorated player, and veteran coach with over two decades of experience developing hockey players of all levels, Frick will lead a new era of skill development and performance training—done the TPH Way.

Frick’s hockey journey is rooted in elite competition and a lifelong dedication to the sport. As a youth player, he skated with Little Caesar’s AAA for five years, winning a U12 national championship and finishing as runner-up at U14 Nationals. He went on to represent Team USA at the 1994 U17 World Championships and earned a silver medal before playing four years of Division I hockey at Lake Superior State. Advancing to the AHL, IHL, ECHL, and CHL Frick logged more than 600 games across his 10-year pro career.

TPH Academy Sport-Focused Training

On the coaching side, Frick has spent the past 13+ years honing players’ skills at every level—from beginners to professionals. In addition to founding Frick’s Dynamic Skating, Matt’s resume includes time as Head Coach with the Colorado Thunderbirds AAA program, the Junior Pioneers at the University of Denver, and Aces Hockey Academy. He’s also contributed as a power skating coach and hockey director in Central Texas, most recently leading hockey programming at The Crossover in Cedar Park—the same state-of-the-art facility that is home to TPH Academy Austin.

At TPH Academy Austin, Frick will lead north of 140 hours of high-quality, part-focused on-ice training, all executed within the framework of the TPH Hockey Development Model. His approach will center on the skills, habits, concepts, and details that support the development of intelligent, adaptable, confident hockey players. Each day of on-ice training will follow a specific theme consistent with the TPH Four Phases of Hockey-Athlete Development, ensuring that every student-athlete gets what they need, when they need it, in order to grow and reach their full potential. Goaltenders will receive position-specific instruction from a dedicated goalie coach, while off-ice video breakdown and analysis will reinforce on-ice learning throughout the week.

The Crossover

“Hockey development is a lifelong pursuit, and what excites me most about joining TPH is how intentional the training is,” shared Frick. “The TPH Hockey Development Model provides a framework to make sure each athlete gets the right focus at the right time in their development. I’ve seen what works at every level—and this works.”

Matt Frick’s arrival coincides with the continued growth of TPH Academy Austin, which offers student-athletes in grades 6-12 a blended learning environment that pairs custom-tailored academics with elite training inside The Crossover—one of Central Texas’ top athletic and performance venues. With two NHL-size ice sheets, a full-service gym, flexible academic support, and a dedicated team of mentors and coaches, TPH Academy Austin offers student-athletes the opportunity to Study, Train, and Play in an environment built for student-athlete development.
