Hockey Is For Everyone: Celebrating Inclusion and Diversity

Black History Month may have passed, but not for the student-athletes who attend TPH – Fort Lauderdale as the 2nd Annual NHL Black Hockey History Tour presented by American Legacy recently visited nearby Sunrise, Florida.

TPH Center of Excellence student-athletes learned more about black achievement in hockey as the mobile museum showcased today’s stars while reflecting back on past pioneers and trailblazers who helped shape the NHL. During the event, student-athletes engaged in interactive exhibits throughout the museum as memorabilia, photographs, reading materials and trivia captured over 100 years of history including celebrating the first black player in the NHL, Willie O’Ree, and women in hockey.

The student-athletes enjoyed seeing the old jerseys on display and reading about how black players advanced the game of hockey. Additionally, Dr. Tere Hernandez-Acosta, Head of Academics at TPH – Fort Lauderdale, mentioned “
It was a great reminder for our student-athletes to see how far hockey has come in terms of inclusion and opportunities for the love of the game they all play and cherish at our Center of Excellence here in Ft. Lauderdale.”

At TPH Center of Excellence, we are committed to developing character and building well-rounded leaders; expanding learning opportunities from the classroom and rink to real world experiences within the community. Furthermore, our mentorship program brings this belief to light for student-athletes who strive to discover, reach and maximize their full potential.

Ensure your student-athlete is elite on and off the ice by registering for the upcoming National Virtual Open House!
